Hatian Child Returns Home

Healing the Children Success StoryPortland Oregon – 13 year old Schneider Orius was born with a severe heart defect in a remote village in northern Haiti.  He had always wanted to play soccer, but in reality was only able to struggle slowly to school.  He came to Portland, Oregon to the Oregon/Western Washington Chapter of Healing the Children (HTC) on November 5th, 2009.  On November 30th, he had a complete repair of Tetralogy of Fallot and is now perfectly healthy and taking no medications.  He was scheduled to return to Haiti on Monday, January 18th, 2010 but his flight was rescheduled at the last minute for January 20th.  Since the earthquake on January 19th closed the airport, he has been awaiting new plans to go home.  His family and village are safe, but relatives from Port au Prince have overwhelmed the household, and money for food is running low.  Even so, Schneider and his family want him home.  On February 25th and 26th, two volunteers from HTC will fly to northern Haiti with Schneider.   Two nuns from Gros Morne will meet him and take him home.  From the end of the road, it is still a one hour brisk walk over a mountain to his village.  Coming here it took Schneider three hours, but going home will seem like flying for him.   And, he can join a late afternoon soccer game with his friends for the first time.

Our volunteers, Don and Barbara Van Nimwegen, will stay in Haiti and the Dominican Republic for two weeks to find hospitals needing and able to accept medical/surgical teams from Healing the Children in 2010.  We hope to send 10-20 teams throughout the rest of the year, and more beyond.  One of the hospitals they will visit in northern Haiti, Sacre Coeur in Milot, has just sent a child to the St. Louis Chapter of Healing the Children for orthopedic care.

As children’s needs are identified, we will need host families in the US to house and care for them while they are receiving medical care here in the US.  If  you are interested in receiving more information, or would like to volunteer, please contact us.

Hospital and Medical Supplies

We are in urgent need of  the following:three

1.  Hospitals- who are willing to donate their services to taking care of one of the many children we plan on bringing  back to the United States for treatments.  We are overwhelmed at the response we have already received from the medical community,  however together we can do more.    The more State-side capacity we have, the more children we can help.

2.  Medical Supplies- As time passes, and as we can send teams of doctors to Haiti and to the Dominican Republic, we will need donated medical supplies to take with us.  If you or someone you know has the capacity to donate medical supplies, please let us know.

HTC Haiti Relief Efforts

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that has hit Haiti, Healing the Children chapters all over the country are responding to the call for help.

With the help of hundreds of volunteer medical professionals, host families, and workers, we can and will make a difference in the lives of Haitian children!  When the dust settles, Healing the Children will be there, healing one child at a time.

For over 30 years, Healing the Children has provided free medical care to children who live in countries where the care is not readily available.  Haiti is no different.
Our mission is two fold:

1. Our goal is to bring 50-100 children into the U.S. for medical care.  We are currently working on and have received commitments from pediatric hospitals all over the country, who are willing to donate their services to help children from Haiti who have been injured in the earthquake.

2. We are also networking with international partners in the Dominican Republic, “Fundacion Corazones Unidos”, to determine their operating capacity.  The idea being that we may send teams of doctors and medical professionals over time to both the DR and Haiti, to provide the necessary medical care that’s needed in the field.

We can not do this without your help and support!  Please look around the rest of this site to see how you can partner with us in making a real difference in the lives of Haitian children.
