The Michigan-Ohio Chapter of Healing the Children recently completed one of their twice yearly trips to Colombia to provide cleft surgeries for needy children there. In the United States, children with these congenital defects are treated as a matter of course. But for poor children in areas with less access to medical care, such a procedure is not so routine. That's where Healing the Children steps in, providing the treatment and care to heal these children so they won't have to suffer the health and social consequences of leaving their condition untreated.
It's a life-changing gift for the children, their families and their communities. But the volunteers are also deeply touched by the experience, like team member Scott Young.
"You asked me why I do this? My answer is to use those gifts given me to help children in need. That said I have to admit what I get in return far outweighs what I give. I get to spend a week observing human beings at their best. The doctors, nurses and team members giving their all. Our hosts, the special members of the Rotary club, the children and their wonderful families. It's not something most people get to experience. I love it and I will continue to do this forever."
