Bi-annual Trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
In early April Desi Ferrell left with a 15 member ENT/Audiology/Urology team for Ethiopia. With twice yearly missions, this is their 8th trip in less than 4 years. They are building an ENT (Ear/Nose/Throat) program with Addis Ababa University where, before Healing the Children's Greater Philadelphia chapter began this effort, the specialty did not exist. They hope to construct a rudimentary sound control room where visiting audiologists can, for the first time, have a way to evaluate the sound field of each patient. Desi also has plans to build a similar program for Pediatric Urology with the Pediatric Surgery Department at the University.
Ms. Ferrell has put another plan into place that revolves around basic human dignity for the children and their families with cancer who live on the 7th floor at Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa. Sadly, because there is no early detection, many of these children will die at the hospital. In order to be close to their children who have advanced cancer, parents sleep on a thin piece of cardboard on the floor. As one solution, with the help of a donation from Unitron, Ms. Ferrell is purchasing 5 (to start with) recliners from a local factory. Anyone wishing to contribute to this effort should contact the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of Healing the Children.
