Fabiola and Christian from El Salvador
Trust. As seen so completely in the eyes of Fabiola, as she is being examined by one of the doctors who is treating her.
Trust. As in the hearts and minds of parents in far away countries who send their precious ones through Healing the Children to us here in America - escorted by perfect strangers - hoping, praying, and trusting that they will be healed.
Trust. Here, they will live in the homes of even more strangers who, nonetheless, will love them and care for them unceasingly.
Through a partnership with the Advocate Heart Institute at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, IL, Healing the Children Illinois/Indiana brings Latin American teens to the United States for life-changing surgeries.
Fabiola and Christian, both from El Salvador, are the 29th and 30th patients treated by this on-going program. They have both sailed through their final checkups and exit interviews, and are returning home with the blessing of good health.
Fabiola and Christian had Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW), a condition where the heart’s upper and lower chambers cause rapid heartbeats due to an extra electrical pathway. Some of the symptoms of WPW include shortness of breath, rapid heart rate and heart palpitations.
Fabiola and Christian’s overall quality of life was hindered due to WPW. They couldn't participate in a lot of activities that normal teenagers do because their hearts just wouldn't allow it. That has all changed. They have been freed from a heavy burden and return home to resume life as perfectly normal teenagers.
Dr. Eric Kessler with the Advocate Heart Institute says he feels honored to have played a part in improving these teenagers’ lives and those of all the past patients involved with the charity program.
“Like most physicians, I entered the field because I was excited and gratified by the opportunity to make a positive impact on people’s lives,” says Dr. Kessler. “That’s why this is such a great program; we are able to provide access for these children that they would otherwise likely never receive, and the benefits will last them a lifetime. I can’t believe we’re already celebrating our 30th patient.”
